SANS 10137 – The installation of glazing in buildings
Quote: “
7.14.2 Butt joining edges
Where the panes in the same plane are butt-joined without fins, they will not have the same wind resistance characteristics as a single pane of the same overall size and thickness. The thickness of such glass should be calculated on the assumption that the butt joint does not have any structural, i.e. the surround will be the only support.

If reinforcing is unavoidable due to the span and wind loading, it might be necessary to install fins attached to the structure at the butt joints as indicated below. A suitable adhesive sealant with sufficient bonding strength to allow movement due to wind loading shall be used.

Silicone sealants that have a tensile strength of at least 1 Mpa are regarded as suitable for this purpose.

Fins would normally be installed on the building where there is likely to be less pedestrian traffic. Fin selection is covered in figures 39, 40 and 41.

Notes:
The above table has been based on Figure 40 and 41of SANS 10137 for a Fin Height/Main pane width ratio of 1.0 or less.
The SANS 10137 recommends:
1) A minimum windloading of 750 Pa is used for the determination of glass fin dimensions for internal and external applications.
2) A minimum glass fin width of 150mm.
3) Glass fin thickness of 12, 15, 19 or 25mm

Any deviation from the above are to be approved in terms of SANS 10400 by a duly appointed competent person in writing for each individual contract .
